Leadership Portland Spotlight: Tracey Lam
Name: Tracey Lam
Company: Partners in Diversity
Job: Director of Programs and Communications
Why they got involved in Leadership Portland:
Portland has been my home since my family immigrated to the United States in 1980. I have traveled to many parts of the country and world, yet Portland remains my favorite place. I have seen the ups and downs of a growing area and experienced the impact of its history of systemic racism. At the same time, I have witnessed the warmth of its people and the resiliency of the region. Like many places, Portland faces an array of challenges, especially after a year like last. I applied for Leadership Portland because it offers an opportunity to create positive change and set an example for others.
Why it’s important:
Former broadcasting executive Donald McGannon once said: “Leadership is an action, not a position.” I believe that the first act is to grow oneself through education, open-mindedness and understanding. A successful leader then acts to help others grow in a way that benefits the community.
Why Tracey loves the Portland region:
I love Portland for its variety – everything from having four distinct seasons; its proximity to the coast, the forests and the high desert; a global food scene; transportation options; and so much more.
In 2014, I co-founded a nonprofit called API Forward that helps develop leaders in the Asian and Pacific Islander community. It stemmed from the need to bring diverse voices to the decision-making table. One of the key programs, a scholarship program called Forward Leadership, involves a 4-month long project in which college students work with government agencies and community-based organizations to solve a problem. Other hobbies include playing the ukulele, yoga and reading.
