Leadership Portland Spotlight: Ramon Valdez
Name: Ramon Valdez
Job: Systems Development
Why they got involved in Leadership Portland:
Over the course of my career, I have learned that our individual lives, organizations, and communities are deeply interconnected. The COVID-19 pandemic has proven this fact. Collective prosperity requires strategic, intentional, and transparent collaboration across sectors and disciplines.
Why it’s important:
We each see the world through the prism that is our own lived experience. This is a beautiful part of being human but can also work against us if we fail to take other lived experiences into consideration. Most of my career has been in the nonprofit sector; from program management, to communications, and funding development. This experience has given me an intimate understanding of how advocacy, policy, nonprofit management, and philanthropic fundraising functions. However, this is one corner of the larger Portland community. To me, good leaders aim to gather as much information as possible before making an objective decision. By broadening our understanding of our larger community, we are able expand our context, make better decisions, and surface innovative ideas that may not currently exist in the spaces where we work day-to-day.
Why Ramon loves the Portland region:
I am OBSESSED with our food cart communities in Portland. It is a great (and delicious) example of how diversity makes our community better and stronger!
Music is a big part of my life! I love to practice various instruments and geek out when it comes to digital audio workstations (DAWs) and music production. Before the pandemic, my wife and I loved going to as many concerts as our schedules allow!
